This book presents the classic of world literature in a carefully abridged form. The text has been translated into modern English, while the style, tone, and expression of the original have been largely preserved. For anyone who wants quick access to this extensive classic. “Les Misérables” by Victor Hugo is a monumental novel about justice, poverty, and humanity in 19th-century France. The story centers on Jean Valjean, a poor man who spends 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. After his release, he is cast out by society. It is only a merciful bishop who places his trust in him. Valjean begins a new life under a different name and becomes a respectable factory owner and mayor. But his past catches up with him: Inspector Javert, a relentless enforcer of the law, pursues him mercilessly. At the same time, Hugo tells the story of Fantine, a working-class woman who falls into poverty and leaves behind her daughter, Cosette. Valjean promises the dying Fantine that he will take care of Cosette. He rescues the girl from the clutches of cruel innkeepers and raises her as his own daughter. Later, Cosette falls in love with the idealistic student Marius, who plays a central role in the Parisian barricade battles. Valjean saves Marius’s life, even though he knows that doing so will mean losing Cosette to him. The novel addresses social injustice, poverty, and questions of morality. Victor Hugo intertwines personal destinies with historical events such as the 1832 uprising and paints a moving picture of human hope and kindness. “Les Misérables” remains a timeless classic about compassion and the struggle for a better life.
